Scaling on-demand storage
Read Full case study

Company Overview

MakeSpace is an on-demand storage company that makes it easy to order, store and retrieve your physical belongings. Instead of hauling their stuff to a storage facility, MakeSpace users take advantage of our software to manage their storage needs on-demand.

As the Product Manager of the Business Operations (BizOps) team I work with four engineers responsible for increasing efficiency at MakeSpace. We build tools and systems with the goal of enabling the next phase of growth for the company. Since starting in 2019, we've helped grow operations from 4 to 31 markets across North America.

The BizOps Team

Only a few weeks after I joined MakeSpace, we secured a Series D round of funding and took on a strategic partner in Iron Mountain. This set the stage for us to take the next leap as a company - quickly expanding from 4 markets to 31 in the following months. In order to support this scale, we needed to upgrade our technology by building systems that were ready to handle this next phase of growth.

The BizOps team supports a number of different products, all with the mission of increasing efficiency at MakeSpace. We work very closely with stakeholders across the organization to ensure the products we build meet cross-functional needs. Much of our work is confidential to MakeSpace, but one publicly discussed product is our upgraded billing system mentioned below.

Key stakeholders for our team

Upgrading Billing

In its early days, MakeSpace built out its own Billing system which was able to handle the majority of requests for a growing startup. As we reached a certain scale, we needed to assess whether this homegrown system would work for the long haul.

Evaluating each of our products through the lens of CORE vs. Non-CORE (i.e. is this product core to MakeSpace) we decided to evolve our billing system leveraging 3rd-party tools where possible.

The BizOps team led this rebuild layering proprietary features unique to MakeSpace on top of steady 3rd-party infrastructure.
